Two Port of Oakland developments have
been nominated in the annual "Real Estate Deals of the Year
Awards". The year 2000 was exceptional for real estate business
in the bay area. The Oakland Telecommunications Access Center by
Mortenson Development has been nominated for Best Industrial Deal.
The Landing at Jack London Square by Legacy Partners in Oakland
has been nominated for Best Residential Deal in Oakland. Mortenson
Development and Legacy Partners worked with the Port of Oakland
and the City of Oakland to bring these developments to fruition.
"Both of these projects demonstrate how the
private and public sectors can work together to generate a vibrant
neighborhood serving both business and residential needs,"
commented Port Commissioner John Protopappas, Chair of the Port
of Oakland's Commercial Real Estate Committee.
There were nine
projects in the City of Oakland nominated for the awards event including
the Gap at 1333 Broadway, Zhone Technology Campus and Rainin Instrument
Company along the Hegenberger Corridor, 555 City Center, the Rotunda
Building and 180 Grand Avenue in Downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt
Tower.
The Oakland Telecommunications Access Center is
a brand new state-of-the-art $30 million telecom center. It is one
of the first facilities of this type to be built from the ground
up. The building is under construction on the block bordered by
Brush, Second, Castro and Third Streets.
"Mortenson is honored that our Oakland Telecommunications
Access Center has been nominated for The Best Industrial Deal of
the Year," said James Fey, Mortenson Project Director. Fey
stated, "This project is a great example of the kind of project
that can be produced when the Developer, City, related governmental
agencies-in this case the Port of Oakland-and the Community recognize
and are sensitive to each others needs." Oakland is gaining
recognition as a key telecommunications hub. And the Port of Oakland
is attracting high tech business to the Jack London Square area.
The Landing at Jack London Square by Legacy Partners
(101 Embarcadero West) is a residential development with 282 apartment
units on the waterfront. It offers studios, 1 and 2 bedrooms, a
clubhouse, an exercise facility, spa and a junior Olympic-sized
swimming pool.
"We are very excited to be part of the Jack
London Square neighborhood that is a strong residential village
and supportive of the excellent retail and entertainment district
which currently exists at Jack London Square," remarked John
McMorrow with Legacy Partners. McMorrow commented, " We're
delighted to have the Landing at Jack London Square recognized for
contributing urban housing located near public transit."
"These award finalists demonstrate Oakland's
skill set at making great real estate deals that contribute to the
economic vitality of the City and the quality of life for its residents,"
stated Omar Benjamin, Port of Oakland's Commercial Real Estate Director.
Benjamin added, "These nominations are fine examples of Oakland's
resurgence as a great place to live, work and play."
