Port of Oakland Celebrates West Oakland Community Day
(Port to host town hall meeting and harbor tour)
Who: Port of Oakland
What: West Oakland Community Day
Where: Poplar Recreation Center, 3131 Union Street, Oakland
When:Saturday, July 28, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Why: To update the community on Port projects, exchange ideas in a town hall-style meeting and to tour the Oakland harbor by boat
The Port of Oakland is inviting the West Oakland community to come to a town hall meeting to learn more about the latest Port projects, be involved in a question-and-answer session with Port staff and enjoy a free harbor tour, Saturday, July 28th, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The West Oakland Community Day kicks off with a town hall meeting at the Poplar Recreation Center, 3131 Union Street at 10:00 a.m. Port staff will provide updates on waterfront projects and issues that directly affect the West Oakland community. A question-and-answer session between Port staff and the public will follow the initial presentation.
"This special day is devoted to the West Oakland community," said Janice Adam, Port of Oakland Community Affairs Representative. "It's one more way that the Port is reaching out to nurture relationships and strengthen communication with those we serve."
The town hall meeting hopes to accomplish several objectives that benefit both the public and the Port:
  • The forum will give community residents a chance to express their thoughts about maritime expansion.
  • his will be an opportunity to introduce the Port of Oakland and its activities to those who have had little or no previous contact with the Port.
  • Those who have an existing Port relationship will be updated of current affairs.
  • The West Oakland community will continue to be informed about the Port's activities according to the Good Neighbor Policy Statement.
Following the meeting at 11:45 a.m., residents can board one of the Port's chartered round-trip shuttles to Jack London Square for a narrated harbor tour. The Port will provide lunches. The vessel leaves at precisely 12:30 p.m. from the ferry terminal at Jack London Square. People who do not attend the town hall meeting will be permitted to go on the harbor tour on a stand-by basis.
